According to the National Institute of Mental Health, many people suffer from irrational fears or phobias. These types of phobias are described as certain situations where irrational fear can debilitate a person, even though most of the time they pose little or no danger to that individual. They can be referred to as anxiety, fears, and phobias.  These issues can develop during early childhood and become increasingly worse during adulthood. Some people even develop phobias in their adult years and those fears get aggravated as more time passes. Feelings that overcome a person become uncontrollable and even incapacitating, even though on the person who experiences them can understand that they are irrational, can easily be eliminated using hypnosis. There is no reason to live in fear as hypnosis can assist people in gaining control of their minds and their lives.

There are generally 4 types of phobias:

Situational Phobias-fear of flying, dentists, driving, tunnels and bridges, public speaking, dating, and other similar social situations

Natural environment phobias-fear of storms, heights, water, darkness, etc

Animal phobias, fear of spiders, snakes, dogs, cats, ants, etc

Blood –injury-injections phobias- fear of bodily injury, blood, injections, etc

No matter the type of phobia, they are all shaped in the same way in the mind and all create a feeling of anxiety when exposed to the item or situation that triggers the fear.  Common symptoms include nausea, dizziness, rapid heartbeat, shortness of breath, chest pain, hot or cold flashes, numbness, tingling sensations, choking, fainting or losing control of one’s bodily functions. This is referred to as the fight or flight reaction.

A trained hypnotherapist can help a patient understand the association between the phobia and the fear associated with it, and identifies methods to control and eliminate it from the patient’s existence. This is done in two ways. First, the hypnotherapist identifies the specific trigger and breaks the association that causes the fear, and then by creating a relaxing response to the fear or phobia. This creates an atmosphere of control for the patient and eliminates the anxiety and fear response they have grown accustomed to. This is done by hypnotizing the patient and entering them into a “relaxed” state of mind. This allows the patient’s brain waves to slow down and the subconscious mind can be engaged in a focused state of relaxation.  The technique is to reprogram the minds reaction to the trigger and there are many different approaches and techniques used to accomplish this.
